I been thinkin' about Texas. I usually don't spend any time thinking about Texas. I'm sure it's a very nice place, but I have no plans to ever visit it, so I don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about it or the people who live there.
But then the governor there started going on and on about how Texas should secede from the United States and at first I thought that would be awful. But then I got to thinking it would probably not be a bad thing.
For one thing, he seems to really want to not be a part of the United States anymore. And I've also read comments from a lot of Texans who agree with him. So I don't think it's a good idea to force people to stick around if they don't want to.
Secondly, think of all the money we, the residents of the United States, will save. I mean, the next time a big ol' freakin' hurricane whirls up from the Gulf of Mexico and slams into the coast of Texas ... well, they're on their own. They can negotiate help from Mexico or something, I guess. We Americans can just express our sympathy and send a few cases of bottled water and call it good. We won't be on the hook for rebuilding or anything.
And then all the Texans would have to get passports to come visit the United States and if they crossed the border illegally ... well, then there'd be trouble.
Of course, maybe no Texans would ever want to visit the United States again. And that would be OK too. I don't think anyone should ever be forced into visiting a foreign country. I went to Canada once when I was 5 and I liked it, but I'm not sure I'll ever go back. I'm glad I have that choice.
So I think this secession thing might work out all for the best. We'll just have to see.
I wonder when the U.S. flags with 49 stars are going to be available to buy?
